S-1 Seat Parachute

Perhaps the most iconic of vintage parachutes, the seat type was one of the most versatile and widely used parachutes of the era. Designed with the pilot sitting on the parachute pack, it allowed flyers to easily flex in their seats and enjoy greater visibility in all directions. The S-1 was initially adopted in 1928, and underwent upgrades over nearly two decades of service. With the outbreak of war, it was simplified to expedite production and re-standardized as the AN-6510.   Due to huge surplus stocks of seat parachutes during the war, this type was widely issued to fighter pilots as well as on training flights.  The S-1 was the parachute of choice for the Flying Tigers, Tuskegee Airmen, as well as the top ETO ace  Gabby Gabreski.

The focal point of the harness is the iconic push/twist  bayonet hardware - sleek, smooth, and locks into place with a satisfying click straight from 1942.  Another distinctive feature is the unique back pad. With 3-dimensional contoured padding designed to fit into the curves of your back, it runs from the shoulder and ties directly into the bottom of the parachute pack and features a white name plate. Also distinctive is the 38D model black seat cushion, standard issue on the S-1.

The harness has full length risers and includes dozens of hand-sewn rigger tacks, just like originals.   Built with our custom dyed "Aircorps Drab" canvas, the pack tray is complete with the  swaged spring-steel wire frame,  5 phenolic stiffeners, and all the detailed maze of flaps, loops, and reinforcements.  The assembly is complete with all part, date, and manufacturer stamps.  A beautiful replica of this classic parachute.
