The B-8 saw operation use in the ETO around late 1943, replacing the rigid and unpopular B-7. It was originally developed by Pioneer Parachute Company for the commercial market, and the USAAF quickly standardized their own version. The new model used special bow stiffeners that molded to the wearers back and greatly increase flexibility. The B-8 was the widely issued to fighter pilots of the P-38 and P-51 and bomber pilots. Contrary to popular belief, the back type, not the seat type, was standard for operational fighter pilots (except for the P-47). Records show that the B-8 accounted for 98% of P-38 & P-51 pilots (see also the AAF Bailout Stats page)
This reproduction is built exactly like the originals. Over 80 feet custom woven webbing is painstakingly interlaced and an actual wartime harness machine creates authentic ultra-heavy 7-class stitching. Custom forged steel fittings from the original blueprints ensure that every "click" of the buckles are an authentic sound straight from 1943. No detail is overlooked, from the chest strap cushion to the period correct anti-fray coatings.
The pack is built with custom tight weave aeronautical canvas, smooth weave HBT tape. The pack stays flexible and close to your back thanks to the WWII pattern bow stiffeners, canvas side wings and shoulder tabs. The pack is closed with an original 4-pin ripcord and genuine USA Scovill fasteners. Complete with all the part, date, and manufacturer, and inspection markings, hand stamped just like originals. Includes instructional manual.
Note: All new B-8 harnesses are upgraded with Red Ripcords and hip rings as standard.
