1st pattern parachute first aid kit, zippered.
(Pouch only, bandage shown for scale)
Officially known as the Parachute First Aid Packet, this small kit was issued to airmen to treat wounds incurred from a parachute bailout. The first pattern pouch (April 1942) was an olive drab rubberized canvas pouch closed by a zipper. It would be tied to the parachute harness lift web, opposite the ripcord, with two web tapes. (The later tear-open version is also available here) These pouches were widely used 1942-1944. These are the very same pouches you'll see in the "Masters of the Air" miniseries - we built them!
The unique waterproofed canvas has been painstakingly recreated. Just like originals, it takes on the olive drab shade from the unique waterproof impregnation. This material no longer exists, so we developed and custom made it from scratch. Modern zippers these days are virtually all narrow tape polyester. Over a year in development, these zippers are 100% cotton, 4-panel HBT weave, extra wide WWII pattern tape, with smooth action nickel plated teeth. The zipper pull also features a custom Talon slider in the now iconic bell style. All stitching is with custom dyed 100% cotton thread. Four custom woven khaki (OD#3) web tapes allow for attachment to the parachute harness, and have the proper sealed ends (period correct sealing mixture). The pouch is complete with the characteristic bold “FIRST AID” lettering silk screened on both the sides.
