RAF Seat Harness
Adopted by the RAF in 1933, the quick release seat harness was standard issue for RAF pilots for several decades. This parachute equipped the pilots of the Spitfires and Hurricanes who fended off the Luftwaffe in the darkest days of 1940, and continued well into the postwar era.
Nearly 100 feet of custom woven Type VIII webbing is painstakingly interwoven and layered (7 layers at points!) to form the harness element. The rare fully circular release box is entirely functional, ejecting all 4 release lugs for instantaneous release - an authentic "click" straight from 1940. Custom stainless metalwork has the proper wartime stamps (no postwar AML marks!) The heavy canvas waist band keeps the original chrome plated ripcord available for instantaneous access when bailing out. It has the iconic AM crown stamps on the chest, IAC inspection stamps throughout, and Irvin labels on the interior back strap. All webbing ends have the period correct anti-fray coating - no detail is overlooked.
The back pad was not only for comfort, but also safety. When racing to the flightline to intercept Messerschmitts, tangled parachute straps could waste precious seconds. With it's original shuttle loomed retainers, 20 stainless press studs and genuine felt padding, the back pad keeps the maze of harness straps orderly and ready for immediately deployment. Built to withstand the rigors of heavy use, the seat pack is heavily reinforced with custom woven 3" webbing, and includes all the internal seams, flaps, and hesitator loops for the suspension lines. A genuine spring steel wire frame holds the pack rigid, and custom woven cotton-sheathed bungees hold the pack taut. The comfortable seat cushion features six ventilation eyelets, and is equipped with press studs for attachment to the pack tray.
Includes the manual, and ships fully packed with display insert - ready to go straight out of the box. The ripcord is fully functional, but the pins and safety tied to prevent accidental deployment. Want to add a parachute canopy? See the Canopies & Fillers page!
